Can I be your librarian and tell you a story? 📚

The other day, a friend reached out because she had swapped some plastic containers for glass jars and wasn't sure how to dispose of the old plastic ones.

My suggestion was for her to donate them to the thrift store or post them on her local buy nothing page. You never know who can take your trash and turn it into a treasure!

Here's how we wrapped the conversation. She said, "Very small steps here but trying."

I want you to remember this, too. That's how change happens.

When you take one small step, then another, you build new habits and create the kind of life you want to build.

Whether that is living more sustainably, reducing your waste, or starting a garden, it's all built on small steps that compound.

Can I be your librarian?

It's a privilege to support your sustainability journey and share the knowledge I've obtained.

I have been building up my own sustainable habits over the last 10 years. There have been many small—sometimes tiny—steps to get to where I am today.

Sometimes it feels like I'm the only one who cares, or maybe I haven't found the right way to encourage and motivate change in your own lifestyle.

What questions do you have about trying to be more sustainable and reduce your waste?

Reply back to this email and let me know so we can keep the conversation going!

7-day mini challenge to reduce waste

I've started a weekly series about how we reduce our waste by sharing what was saved from the trash can. Though it feels mundane and simple, I've received more interest than I anticipated.

This curiosity led me to create a free mini challenge to encourage you to reduce your own waste!

See you next week!

🌱TIP OF THE WEEK!

Join the mini challenge to reduce your waste. So that there are no surprises, here is a preview of each task:

  • Become a member at the local library
  • Go one day without shopping on Amazon
  • Visit the farmer's market
  • Go one day without spending $$
  • Make a meal at home
  • Say no to something
  • Purchase plastic alternatives

That's it! There's a bit more guidance with each email but this is exactly how you can reduce your waste in 1 week.

Flowers on the holmestead When we returned from our visit to Oregon last week, I was so sad to find some spoiled food in our fridge (fresh summer peaches!). It reminded me how easy it is to buy more than what we need—especially when there is seasonal produce galore everywhere. Are you someone that does this? Shops with your stomach and assumes it will all be consumed before going bad? Even throwing away rotten tomatoes that I grew pulls at my heart strings. (We have have 10 gallons of...

Took a walk down memory lane Last week I went to visit an old college friend who lives in the same town where we attended school. She was getting married over the weekend and I wanted to spend time with her before the big day. Walking down the streets and witnessing all the changes that have happened in the last 10 years was a gift. I remembered visiting the library for the first time and using my local address to become a member. It was exhilarating! Once I moved off campus and went to the...

Hello from Oregon! staying with family and watching my best friend get married I’m all about thrifting something first before buying it new.Keeping products in circulation is a great way to reduce your waste in a tangible way. This year I've started teaching sourdough to our local community via an in-person workshop. A few days before the workshop, I visit our local kitchen supply store to purchase a few items I recommend for sourdough baking so that students can conveniently buy them right...
